CREATION - THE FIRST DAY

Without an Audience

My cycle of sonnets and extended sonnets follows the Bible narrative of seven 'days' of creation. On the first day, God created light and separated it from darkness.

This is one of my very early sonnets. I have not done a syllable count. At that time I counted the beats, five per line.

CREATION: DAY I

Out of the dreaming dark, where Love and Life
Dance unhindered in the emptiness,
The give-and-take of Godhead, by its spark,
Causes creation: something out of nothingness.

Being itself, Existence without constraint,
Confers existence on a world we can measure.
Peace, uninhibited, ignites the faint
Pulse of a quark; the beginning of order; the pleasure

Of a universe forming; system in system evolving,
Looping spools of spheres, galaxies on their axes;
From atoms to deepest space, matter revolving,
Evolving, resolving, revealing its identities;

And by its ordered progress, bringing delight
To Being itself, who summons it out of the night.
