Sonnets, and Others

Introduction to the sequence

CREDO
God for all Times and Seasons

You are the God of sun and stars and moon,
Seven days’ variety: light and shade;
Earth and water; fire’s glow, wind’s tune;
Eggs and turtles and giant ferns; all made,

All master-minded, all adapted,
Each to its place, and fitted to survive:
Polar bears in snow; trails where the moose led;
Owls in winter trees: warmth alive!

Snakes for the desert, lizards in cracks,
Speed for open plains: gnu and gazelle;
Songbirds for woodlands, fox leaving tracks,
Eagles for uplands: heath and harebell.

And us, in the heart’s varied landscape:
Stormy seas, or the waves’ gentle lap,
Home-hearth’s glow or the blasting volcano,
Fumbling mist, where we can’t see a scrap!

Through all we have shepherd and teacher,
To lift and support and urge on:
God, who challenges and feeds every creature,
And, in all our trials, loves each one.

Happy 2008 everyone
